G’day Angelina,
Art2: “I think, therefore I am” – DescARTes
I’m ARThur, the pesky Boobook owl.
We’ve sent a parliament of owls to you to communicate the importance of Art in the peace process. Through Art, we can make a massive and much needed difference.
Peace is defined as the absence of war; but it is so much more than this. Peace is the sculpture of love, it is; love understood. As a consequence, war becomes absent.
Peace and war are opposites. Their respective attributes must too, be opposites. I’ve made a little chart using deductive philosophy of their polar attributes and the power of Art becomes abundantly clear.
WAR............................................................................PEACE
FEAR.............................................................................LOVE
PROPAGANDA....................................................................ART
What propaganda is to war, Art is to peace. If “knOWLedge is power,” then Art must be very powerful.
“there is nothing in the intellect, that was not first in the senses” – Aristotle
Art affects the sense of beauty. Love is beautiful.
In the recent past, the film “An Inconvenient Truth,” was solely responsible for catapulting the entire ‘global warming’ issue onto the main stage. Scientists have been petitioning governments for decades to no avail. It is now a daily topic in the news media.
After the “FREE MANDELA” concert at Wembley Stadium in London in the late 1980’s we witnessed Nelson Mandela, the trophy of Apartheid, walk from prisoner to President.
In the early 1980’s we saw how “Band-Aid” raised millions of dollars and awareness for the famine in Ethiopia.
“all the world’s a stage” - Shakespeare
Art is a powerful medium of communication. Artists; like yourself, are therefore in a very powerful position to bring the people of the world together in an unparalleled show of people power.
Imagine the support that the combined efforts of people like yourself, Bono, George Clooney, Oprah, Melissa Etheridge, P!NK, Annie Lennox, Susan Sarandon, Sir Bob Geldof, Tim Robbins, Sean Penn, Bruce Springsteen – the list is endless, could muster. With a clear goal, the world’s greatest Artists, the mass media machine and a sea of people power we can make the difference that our governments, thus far, have not.
Hope is a beautiful and powerful force. We witnessed its glory at the inauguration of President Obama. The winds of change are in the air because of the recognized mistakes that we have made in the past. War begets more war. Love is the antidote. Peace is the outcome.
“if you want a message of love to be heard, it has got to be sent out” – Mother Theresa
My hope is that you will help to “stART the pARTy,” and mention the “owl” in the media and I’ll ask the world to send an owl to Bono on your behalf. Let’s see how many owls he gets and we can raise a bucket load of cash for peaceoneday.org in the process.
As momentum builds with the support of more Artists, a unified voice for peace will start to echo around the world. It will be listened to. We will be heard. I choose peace.
“be the change you wish to see” - Gandhi
